Short Synopsis
News You Might Have Missed has published important but overlooked news from around the world every Wednesday since February 2002, and now is expanding to a free daily service and a syndication-based revenue model.
Description/Treatment
Since 2000, Newsdesk.org has published commercial-free, nonpoliticized, civic-minded journalism on the Web, to strengthen democracy and civil society. We've also published News You Might Have Missed each Wednesday since February 2002. NYMHM tracks national and global issues through the local and regional lens, and showcases our focus on important but overlooked news and underserved communities.Today, with interns from several Bay Area journalism schools, a pro bono editor, and a core of paid freelance writers, NYMHM drives an average of 25,000 unique visitors monthly to Newsdesk.org. This is on the strength of only one update each week, and a freelance budget of just $15,600 in 2009. Financial oversight is provided by Independent Arts & Media, a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor for independent media/culture programs.
Our "local.newsdesk.org" proposal was a finalist in the 2009 WeMedia/Changemakers Pitch It contest in Miami. Our goal is to create a network of independent but affiliated online news bureaus that put professional journalists to work in underserved communities nationwide. The bureaus will cover important but overlooked news; fund themselves via earned income as well as individual donors and philanthropy; and share best practices and a 501(c)(3) back office to handle vital business operations.
News You Might Have Missed provides the template to do this. It's extremely cost-efficient, has a rigorous but adaptive editorial method, and produces high-quality, relevant work that moves easily between print, Web, A/V and wireless media. Response from potential syndication clients has been strong, but success requires consistent production and delivery of content, developing effective marketing for the service, and building out clientele and partnerships.
With your support we will recruit and hire a full-time editor to produce and publish NYMHM on a daily basis, and continue building a solid content foundation that can drive mission fulfillment, as well as deepen sustainability. This will free up resources for marketing, building clientele, strategic planning and big-picture project development.
