Description/Treatment

TRANSCENDING - THE WATMISAKA STORY is a feature length documentary film about Wat Misaka, the firstperson of color to be drafted into what is now the NBA.  A second generation Japanese American who was born, raised and isstill living in Utah, in 1947 Wat became the first draft pick ever for the NewYork Knicks. Overcoming the national political climate during World War II, Watwas a star player for the University of Utah 1944 and 1947 championship teams, taking 2 years off in between to serve in the U.S. Army. His perseverance andloyalty to his teammates, other Nissei friends (including those interned atTopaz) and his family are a testament to the unflappable Japanese Americanspirit. This film includes in depth interviews with Wat and his family, teammates from his championship teams (including All-American star Arnie Ferrinof the Minneapolis Lakers) sports authorities (including Knicks HistorianDennis D'Agostino and ubiquitous New York sportscaster Spencer Ross), and manywho continue to look up to him as both a role model and personal hero. The filmalso has video clips from his 1944 and 1947 college tournament games, rarefootage from a visit to the Topaz Internment Camp, and countless photos of histriumphant career. The 1940s soundtrack consists of music that was meaningfulto Wat, and indelibly sets the context of the time period. The film is complete, but we have not finished securing music rights.
