Short Synopsis
Docs In Progress is an incubator for new voices in documentary film. Through a variety of programs, we give emerging documentary filmmakers the tools and support network to improve their skills at all stages of the filmmaking process.
Description/Treatment
Docs In Progress is committed to helping aspiring documentary filmmakers make better films by giving them the tools to foster and improve their storytelling skills at all stages of the filmmaking process. Filmmakers who participate in Docs In Progress programs are equipped with new ideas and renewed confidence to create quality works that reflect the complexities of the human condition. In addition, Docs In Progress serves to educate and engage the public on different approaches to non-fiction filmmaking and facilitate a dialogue in which the audience is a key part of the process. By creating an inclusive community reflecting a diversity of cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, both filmmakers and the audiences they seek to reach are empowered to improve and enhance their critical thinking and creative skills. Docs In Progress consists of three key programs:
Community Screenings: Filmmakers screen unfinished works to the public and participate in a moderated feedback workshop. This honest and constructive feedback from both peers and strangers is aimed at helping the filmmaker see his or her film in a new light and has helped many filmmakers break through creative blocks and move on to complete their films.
Educational Training and Professional Development Programs: Docs In Progress offers classes, workshops, seminars, salon-style screenings, and other adult education programs to help emerging documentary filmmakers develop the critical skills needed to produce and appreciate successful and meaningful documentaries. Fees and schedules are set to accommodate students who would not be able to participate in a traditional university program.
Community Outreach Programs: While Docs In Progress works to foster the work of the documentary film community, documentary storytelling is about making connections with different communities. We are also committed to engaging the broader public through a variety of outreach and engagement programs which reach youth, seniors, and members of the diverse Silver Spring community.
