Outreach/Engagement Plan(s)

Original Intention “Kano” started as an investigative article that was commissioned to me. I was set out to write the story about this “crazy American” who raped children. As it turns out, the story was much bigger than a rape story; and the deeper I got the more I realized that I wanted to dig deeper. This is how I started the documentary--I had no advocacy or agenda. I just had the curiosity of a journalist who got hooked. But reaching out cannot be helped. Curiosity led to engagement of the people involved in this web of issues.
The Outreach Partners This story would not have been possible without the help and cooperation of the Commission on Human Rights and Gabriela (one of the country’s leading women’s groups). I plan to reach out to them again when I want to show this to the people of Negros Occidental. As a grantee of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), we plan to promote this movie using the existing outreach program of this agency. NCCA’s mandate to promote arts around the nation complements my own objective to develop a local audience for documentaries.

Short Synopsis

A Vietnam War hero decides to spend the rest of his post-war life in the Philippines. Hundreds of women have come and stayed in his house located in a remote village. In 2001, Pearson was charged with over 80 counts of rape. We think you’ll like him.

Description/Treatment

“Kano” is the fascinating and awful story of a convicted rapist and his women who come together to form a most dysfunctional group. After three decades of living in the Philippines, ex-marine Victor Pearson is charged with over 80 counts of rape. As it turns out, the charges against him were made by his own harem, the mistresses of the Pearson Household. Pearson is now in jail, but many of the women remain at his side.

There is nothing straightforward or simple about the stories in “Kano”. And I would like to give it the perspective of a filmmaker who sees the film as a means to voice out the effects of the unresolved issues of extreme poverty, colonialism, sexism and feudalism.

I think the most interesting aspect of the film is the ambiguity of each character. The American and the women who surround him are so compelling, that all I had to do was to show confluence of their lives. And by doing so I hope to create a truly relevant slice of our world and our times.
