Short Synopsis

Educational event about the strengths of mental health recipients and encouragement of films from a mental health recipients point of view as well as a day of empowerment for mental health recipients. Last year's attendance 222 people. 40 non recipients.

Description/Treatment

This year we will explain how mental health recipients have found their voice and a place of equality in the arts. Our first film "Lens and Pens: Art in an Unexpected Place" details an art program in a hospital for those found not guilty by reason of insanity. These art members share their views on life through art and many leave the program to be productive citizens.

The Second Film, "To See What I See" shows how art can defeat stigma. In this art program recipients convey their life story thru art. Thier final projects show how recovery is possible. ALso thru art people see the recipients as artists with talents and abilities not people to fear.

Next up is two short films on adult home advocacy. This media program shows how mental health recipients can achieve change when they work together.

The film festival aims to educate the public about theabilities of mental health recipients. We will post over 1,500 posters in Brooklyn, where the film festival is being held. We will have a 1/2 hour show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network, and have already received two press clippings this year. We are listed on Community Calendars and film fest sites.
