She moved to Switzerland and for four years produced travel videos on cruise ships. In 1996 she moved to Italy, realising TV-reports for an Italian production company. Four years later she founded the Marta Polo Mediaproduction Italy, which produce services, reports and documentaries in collaboration with European Broadcasters, mainly focusing on social and ecological issues.

Michael Schumacher
Camera Operator & Technical Supervisor
Michael has a long production and shooting experience in Nature-, Wildlife and Social Films. He is producing documentaries with his own German based company (RS-Film) in collaboration with different German Broadcasters. We have already collaborated in the past for different documentary projects such as "Wild West in Italy","Snakes in Paradise" and "Dolphin Intelligence".

Outreach/Engagement Plan(s)

- Broadcasting this documentary in as many countries as possible is the first step to reach a wider audience. Until today the Public German Broadcaster WDR has commissioned a first 30' Min. version, while the National Irish Broadcaster RTE has offered to support the production of the final 60-90'Min Doc with a completion fund. In addition we received confirmation of interest from other European Public broadcasters and currently negotiating with them for either a co-production/ pre-buy while still in production or an acquisition on a later stage as part of distribution.

- Each broadcast will be accompanied by an additional press release with the aim to inform and involve also the National print media about the issue.

- Creating a website for the project we hope to raise additional attention and distribute further  information to a wider audience. (Pls. see Cross-Media-Project for further information)

- We are also looking for other Independent Producers with documentary projects focusing on the nomads lifestyle, their relation and interaction with the settled society who are interested in networking with us to create a wider outreach for each single project.

- Both the Cross Media Platform and the documentary will be promoted towards the common social networks and channels by a short trailer (Youtube, Facebook etc.)

- Screening at International Festivals after completion will create additional attention in a more defined target audience with special interest for human rights and social issues, Some of our earlier documentary productions have been shown and awarded at ChasDoc/US, Document5/UK, Human Right Film Festival/ NZ, International Festival of Ethnological Film/ Serbia, Religion Today/ Italy and others.

- The documentary will be available free of charge for educational Institutions, Community Centres and libraries.

- Negotiation with video distributors for home distribution will be made only once the film is completed.

Short Synopsis

"The Need to Move" focuses on a highly topical issue: The current situation of nomadic minorities in Europe. Giving a very personal and unique inside view into Irish Traveller life, this documentary reveals crucial points and discovers the real causes for existing social problems in and between two different societies.

Description/Treatment

Joining the lives of two Irish Traveller lovers and their feuding families the film starts three months before a court case relating to a riot between both families. As a foreign settled filmmaker I had the opportunity to accompany them closely with my camera, which requested exceptional tolerance and faith both on their part and mine. Therefore this film tells far more than just a tragic love story. The problems the young couple and their families have to face in their daily lives are problems many other Irish Travellers all around the country know from their own experience too. What makes their individual story special is the faith and trust they give us to let us join them in their particular emotional situation within a very tense period! Through their open expressions, their compassion and their emotions we can look into their hearts, which will touch us and let us share their feelings. This could be a first step and might be probably the only right way to understand each other.

After the pronouncement of the judgement at the end of February this year, I have temporarily interrupted filming but intend to follow up in December this year with the aim of documenting the influence and effect of the court decision on the people’s lives and the relations between the families and obviously too, the ongoing efforts of the two young lovers to get married….

My principal intention and the main motivation for everybody involved in this project is to focus on the real reasons which have caused and are still causing a very tense situation inside the Traveller Community itself and might also be key factors for the existing gap between the Traveller and the Settled Community.
Cross Media

Cross-Media

In collaboration with National NGOs we are currently creating a Web Page, connected to the documentary, witch should serve as a Cross-Media-Platform. We would like to use this web page not only for promoting the documentary but also give additional information and support the relation & interaction between young people from the Settled and Travelling Community, informing and educating them in a playful and entertaining way by using multimedia content (quiz, games, video & audio clips). Our objective is to improve the communication between people and support projects which help young Travellers practically to use their individual skills and talents for being able to face their future life more positive and successfully.
