Key Personnel

Adam Mazo

He has spent time in Rwanda researching and shooting around the country beginning the investigation into the conflict resolution practiced by REACH. The work included short-form documentary pieces, which aired on commercial television, on issues in Rwanda as well as Uganda including: the war in northern Uganda, education of displaced children, and stories about the work of REACH. For the last decade he has worked as a journalist in the television news business contributing to an Edward R. Murrow award and Emmy award winning work at several stations. He has traveled through more than 20 countries throughout North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He was also trained at the University of Florida where he earned a B.S. in television production. He lives in Boston.

Scott Ippolito

An award winning documentary cinematographer, his most recent work is on “RETURNED: Child Soldiers of Nepal's Maoist Army,” where he was in charge of the main camera operation and dealing with production equipment throughout the course of the project on location. He will perform the same duties on “Reconciliation's Reach.” Ippolito has an extensive background in photography, cinematography and videography; he has worked on several feature films and documentaries in Asia and North America. Ippolito is a graduate of Emory University where he pursued his love of photography and writing. Outreach/Engagement Plan(s)

What We Offer: Since its premiere in November 2010, Coexist has achieved international recognition, appearing in film festivals globally, nominated for an Africa Movie Academy Award, and used in 60+ schools, colleges, and universities in Massachusetts and around the world. The Coexist team has delivered various levels of intervention: providing resources, phone consultations for teachers and school leaders, in-class workshops, whole-school assemblies, training of trainers to ensure sustainability.

Potential Collaborators: Screenings for 60 teachers and additional staff members at Primary Source and Facing History and Ourselves in Boston and Denver have created the potential to reach several thousand students. Several workshops and screenings have resulted from these screenings. Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education (CHHRE) is using Coexist to build capacity for upstanding and violence prevention among students, teachers and community leaders via custom designed workshops in South Florida schools. The CHHRE serves 338 schools in 7 counties and intends to deliver at least 10 more workshops in area schools. Publicity about Coexist workshops prompted new demand among teachers. Numerous schools in Massachusetts want Coexist in their classrooms but do not have any financial resources to purchase the film or train their teachers. High school principals in Worcester and Arlington, Massachusetts have written letters of support. We are also in communication with school leaders in Northampton, Newton, Brookline, Bedford, and Roxbury who are all interested in Coexist. Many other teachers have expressed interest but need outside resources to move forward.

Project Cost & Needs: Our total budget for the 2012-2013 school year of $150,000 would fund 60-70 workshops. Grants fulfilling this budget would allow us to make 20-30 DVDs and Teacher’s Workbooks available to schools that are ready to use them and deliver 40+ comprehensive program including teacher training, student workshops, evaluation and assessment of impact, and follow-up with teachers. Grants of any size would also send a strong message to other funders that Coexist is effective and has support from across the community.

Description/Treatment

We work with individual middle and high schools and school districts, and serve youth development organizations, and colleges and universities. Coexist is a project of amazo productions LLC, a documentary film production and educational outreach organization.

Project Activities & Goals: Coexist has made a measurable contribution to efforts to reduce in violence by providing tools that build social-emotional skills, promote reflection and discussion, teach deep listening by sitting in circles, and foster positive action by youth in their communities. Response to Coexist has been extremely positive. In evaluations the vast majority of students report thinking differently about how to handle conflict. Students recognize the connections between what occurred in Rwanda, and the divisiveness scapegoating and violence in their own lives and communities.
